What is Antelope Island State Park:

Nestled in the serene waters of the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island State Park is a natural wonder that captivates visitors with its unique landscapes, rich history, and abundant wildlife. This 28,800-acre island offers a diverse range of activities, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and adventure seekers alike.

Antelope Island is the largest of the ten islands located within the Great Salt Lake. Known for its stunning scenery and diverse wildlife, the island is home to free-ranging bison, pronghorn antelope, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and a wide variety of bird species. The park provides a perfect blend of outdoor activities, from hiking, biking, paddleboarding, swimming, and wildlife sightseeing.

History of Antelope Island:

The history of Antelope Island dates back thousands of years. Indigenous peoples, including the Fremont and Shoshone, inhabited the area long before European explorers arrived. The island got its name in 1845 when John C. Frémont and Kit Carson named it after observing numerous pronghorn antelope during their exploration.

In the late 1800s, the island became a ranching area, primarily for cattle and sheep. In 1893, the first bison were introduced to the island, and today, the bison herd is one of the island’s most iconic features.

In 1981, Antelope Island was designated as a state park, preserving its natural beauty and historical significance for future generations.

What to Do on Antelope Island:

Hiking and Biking:

The island boasts numerous trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging hikes. The Frary Peak Trail is a popular choice for those seeking panoramic views of the island and the Great Salt Lake. Mountain biking enthusiasts can explore the White Rock Bay and Mountain View trails, offering breathtaking scenery and diverse terrain.

Wildlife Viewing:

Antelope Island is a haven for wildlife lovers. The island’s bison herd, one of the oldest and largest publicly owned herds in the country, can often be seen grazing in the grasslands. Birdwatchers will delight in the variety of bird species, including pelicans, hawks, and owls.

Swimming and Boating:

The Great Salt Lake’s high salinity makes swimming a unique experience, allowing swimmers to float effortlessly. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also popular activities, providing a different perspective of the island’s beauty. You definitely do not want to miss this experience of floating in the Salt Lake- no matter the temperature 🙂

Historic Sites:

Visit the Fielding Garr Ranch, established in 1848, to learn about the island’s ranching history. The ranch offers a glimpse into the lives of early settlers and the challenges they faced.

When to Go:

Antelope Island State Park is open year-round, but the best times to visit are during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is mild, and the wildlife is most active. Summer can be hot and buggy, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F, while winter offers a quieter experience with fewer visitors and a chance to see the island’s beauty covered in snow.

It should be noted that if you do visit in the summer while the temperatures are high, you will want to make sure to bring plenty of bug spray- especially if you are on the water!

Tips for your trip to Antelope Island:

  1. Stay Hydrated: The island’s arid climate can be dehydrating, especially during summer. Bring plenty of water for your visit.
  2. Bug Protection: Mosquitoes and biting gnats (no-see-ums) can be prevalent, particularly in late spring and early summer. Bring insect repellent to ensure a comfortable visit.
  3. Wear Sunscreen: The high elevation and reflective surfaces of the lake can intensify the sun’s rays. Apply sunscreen generously to protect your skin.
  4. Plan Ahead: Check the park’s website for any closures or alerts, and consider visiting during weekdays to avoid crowds.
  5. Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a safe distance, especially the bison, which can be unpredictable. Follow all park guidelines to ensure both your safety and the wellbeing of the wildlife!

Antelope Island State Park is a gem in Utah’s crown, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and history.
