Growing in Faith: Practical Steps to Deepen Your Walk with God

Everyone wants to grow in different areas of life. But the one area we have to be diligent in is with our walk with the Lord. Growing in faith is imperative for our christian life.

Growing in faith starts with being intentional about it. Intentionally setting time aside in your day to be with the Lord will allow you to grow in grace and our knowledge of Him.

At Grow | Go | Sow, our mission is to help believers intentionally grow in their faith through prayer, scripture memorization, and practical application. If you are looking for a way to deepen your relationship with Christ through scripture memorization, read more about our group here!

The month of July, our focus word was GROW with the goal to memorize these verses—

  1. 2 Peter 3:18
    • “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
  2. Ephesians 4:14-15
    • “That we henceforth be no more children, being tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
    • But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Here’s how you can grow in your faith too.

Why Spiritual Growth Matters

Growth in faith is intentional. Here’s why it’s so important:

  1. It’s a commandment from God
    • Matthew 22:36-37
      • It is the greatest commandment to love God with everything in us. How can we love Him if we do not grow in walking with Him? It is a relationship that works hand in hand. If we do not love Him, we cannot grow as a Christian.
    • 1 Peter 2:1-3
      • We are not to be stagnant in our Christian life being content with staying in the newborn stage. We have to increase our learning, understanding, and knowledge of Him and consume beyond milk to meat.
  2. It helps us reflect Christ
    • Genesis 1:27 & 1 Peter 2:21
      • The word ‘Christian’ means ‘belonging to Christ” or ‘of Christ’. The Lord wants us to be like Him
      • We can never be Him, but we can be like Him. It should be obvious who our King is.
    • Ephesians 4:22-24
      • After salvation, we are made new and are called to live after God in righteousness and holiness.
  3. It fulfills God’s purpose
    • 1 Kings 8:59-60
      • We have one goal on Earth, to know Him and make Him known.
      • The only way we can grow His kingdom is by growing in our walk with Him.
  4. It strengthens our relationship with God
    • Proverbs 9:10
      • Respect for God is a cornerstone in our faith. This is described in scripture as fear of God.
      • Fear of God is a posture of respect for Him out of love and obedience.
      • Fearing God allows us to reconstruct our thought process to make decisions that are Christ like.
      • In order to grow in our walk with God and our relationship with Him, we have to know Him- not about Him. We grow in knowing Him through wisdom, understanding, and knowledge of His word.

Growth isn’t optional—it’s a vital part of walking with God.

What We Need to Grow In

Everything we do should reflect God’s two greatest commandments:

  • Going back to the greatest commandment from Matthew 22:36-40, it is really simple what we need to grow in-
    • Love God – with all our heart, soul, and mind.
    • Love Others – as we love ourselves.
  • Everything we do should reflect back to those commandments.

By focusing on loving God, we naturally grow in our love for others.

growing in faith requires loving the Lord

How to Grow: Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge

We have to know Him to love Him. We can know Him through scripture via wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.

These three key elements are a dynamic process. This means that they have to have each other to progress and if one is missing, the other two are unable to progress. If we don’t have wisdom, we will lack understanding, and not gain knowledge.

You can also compare these with building a house (Proverbs 24:3-4)

  • Wisdom – the foundation
  • Understanding – the structure of the house
  • Knowledge – the filling, decoration, and everything inside

We cannot have the furniture if we don’t have a house. We can’t have a house if we don’t have the foundation- this is the dynamic process (Proverbs 2:10).

Key Scriptures:

Growth is a dynamic process—without one element, the others cannot fully develop.
